This is It, Make No Mistake Where You Are

The Rockies are 14-6 which is their 2nd best start after going 15-5 in 1997.  They also were 14-6 after 20 games in 2011, but went on to a losing record.

The Rockies finally got their offense going outscoring their opponents 34-12 in this homestand.  They have their first four game winning streak of the season.  They are now 7-3 at home and 7-3 on the road.  After stopping the Nationals 7-game winning streak, they now own the best record in the National League and only trail Baltimore for the best record in MLB.

Through 20 games the Rockies pitching has held up pretty well.  Only five times have the starter failed to go at least 5 innings, and five times the starter has gone 7 or more including Chatwood's complete game shutout on April 15th.  The past week has eased the bullpen a little bit as the two off days, The relievers have only pitched 19 innings in the past 8 days.  It's still amazing that the Rockies have held their opponents to 4 runs or less 12 times and have a 10-2 record in One or Two run games.
German Marquez gets his first start filling in for Jon Gray tonight.  Gray is expected to be out until at least mid-May and the Rockies will need to fill in a handful of starts in his absence.

Where Has All The Offense Gone?

The Rockies are only 14 games into the season and have scored only 48 runs while giving up 55, which would generally equate to a losing record of 6-8 according to Baseball-Reference.com but actually have a 9-5 record.  To compare, in 2016 the Rockies had scored 66 runs but had given up 77 and had a 6-5 record after 11 games.  In 2015 they had a 7-4 record scoring 51 runs to 37 against.

The big difference is that the Rockies this year are winning the close games, going 8-1 in one and two run games.    The Giants meanwhile are 1-7 in One and two Run games which is why they are currently 5-9.

With the Rockies lineup, you know the bats will break out at some point, but for now the job by the starters and especially the bullpen has been lights out.  They are tied with Detroit for most Save Opportunies with 8 and have only blown 1.

The Bullpen has worked 43 innings in 14 games which is just over 3 innings a game.   Their WHIP is 0.931.  The Trio of Adam Ottavino, Mike Dunn and Greg Holland have pitched 19 1/3 innings giving up 6 hits and 1 run.  Holland also has 7 Saves.

Even more encouraging is that in 10 of the 14 games the Pitching staff has held the opponent to 5 or fewer runs, and are 6-0 when leading after 6.  The only lead they lost late was in the 7th inning where Milwaukee tied up the game in the 7th off of Ottavino, but the Rockies came back to win it in the 9th.

Triumphs:  The Rockies won a 4 game series in San Francisco for the first time ever.

Defeat:   Pitcher Jon Gray broke his foot on Thursday night and will be on the shelf for at least a month.  Rockies need to get Tyler Anderson's mechanics fixed quickly to fill the void.

Schedule Quirk 1:  The MLB schedule has each team play each team in its divison 19 times whcih means they play two teams 10 times at home and two teams 10 times on the road.  This usually results in a 4 game and 2-3 game series over the course of the season, and the other  two get three 3 game series.  For some reason this season is different.  The Rockies play the Giants and the Dodgers only 9 times on the road, but somehow they got a 4-3-2 schedule with both of them which is why the Rockies played 4 this weekend and only 2 in LA this week.

Schedule Quirk 2:  The Rockies have a total of 16 days off not including the All-Star Break which includes only 2 in April and 2 in May.   The two in April are both this week.  The next day off after is May 1st.

Schedule Quirk 3:  After the two game set in LA the Rockies play the next 17 of 23 at home with the road trip going to Phoenix and San Diego.  After that they play 31 out of 45 on the Road.

Is This The Real Life? Is This Just Fantasy?

The people surrounding the Colorado Rockies are optimistic as they head into their 25th Season.  And it's not just Beginning of Season Fantasy Optimism, it's real Optimism, which they have had since late last season.

The Rockies already boast a stellar lineup with a starting eight that can field and hit like very few teams can.  They also have a lot of up and coming Starting Pichers that may rival the Dodgers and Giants in a Pitching heavy division.  Jon Gray, Tyler Anderson, Tyler Chatwood, Antonio Senzatela, and Hometown guy, Kyle Freeland round out the opening day Rotation, with others waiting in the wings when they are needed.

The bullpen has 8 arms including four who have closing experience.  Greg Holland has opened the season with 4 Saves and Jake McGee got the 5th one as the Rockies have not won by more than two runs so far this year.  In 2016 they were 24-36 in one or two run games,

Highlights of the first week:
Won 5 Games by 1 or 2 runs.
Won 2 Straight games by a 2-1 score for the first time since April, 1995.
Had a ML Debut of two consecutive starters for the first time in Rockies History.  One won his game the other pitched 5 scoreless innings.
Hit Back to Back Home Runs off of Clayton Kershaw who had never given up 2 Consecutive Home runs to anyone.
Hit three home runs in a game against Kershaw who hadn't allowed three since April, 2013.
Beat Kershaw for the first time in 12 Starts going back to July, 2013.

It's only six games with 156 to go, but this could be the competitive season we've been looking for.

Flashes of Brilliance

The 2016 Rockies had an up and down first third of the season.  Playing .500 on the road, but flailing at home until the last homestand, they struggled to a 24-31 start.   They have blown numerous big leads and 15 leads overall, while coming from behind 11 times.

Three players have over 15 Home runs, two players have 4 triples and four players have over 15 doubles.  One player, Trevor Story, is on all three of those lists.

The Pitching rotaion has primarily involved seven players, with impressive starts by most of them, and some consistency showing among Chatwood, Butler, Gray, and Rusin.  Bettis was good early but has struggled the last few weeks.  Add Tyler Anderson's impressive debut Sunday against the Padres, and the Rockies may have the makings of a strong rotation.  It won't rival the Dodgers and Giants, but it may suffice for the Rockies, as they have already racked up five shutouts including an impressive 1-0 game at Dodger Stadium last week.

So can they make a run this season and contend for the Division or Wild Card?  If they are the time may be now in the next 50 games over the next 8 weeks.  Currently one game under .500, they play 25 of their next 50 at home and have only two off days besides the 4 day All-Star Break.  13 games are against the West, and play their remaining 15 Inter-League Games, with the rest of the 22 games against the NL East.  That's right, 0 games against the NL Central where they are 7-13.  (Their next NL Central game is August 19th against the Cubs.)

Will they take advantage of this stretch? Stay tuned.

Tulo Whatzki?

I was determined not to make a pun of Trevor Story's name in the first post about the new shortstop of the Rockies, so I didn't even though this  players first three games were like no other before him.

Trevor became the Rockies starting SS after Jose Reyes had some domestic issues and currently is not suspended but also not allowed to play at the moment.  Entering spring training it was a battle between Trevor and Cristhian Adames who played some games in September last year.  Both players ultimately made the roster with Story getting the starting assignment at SS in the end.

In case you missed it, Trevor Story hit 4 home runs in his first three games in the majors, some thing no other player has done before.  In addition only 26 other players in the history of Major League baseball have hit home runs in the first 3 games of the season.  Of those only 4 other players have hit 4 home runs in those 3 games

Now Story comes to Coors Field and has a chance to match the longest Home Run streak to start a season which would tie him with Mark McGwire and Willie Mays.  Nobody has hit home runs in the first 5 games of a season before.

The 2016 Rockies

I remain optimistic that the Rockies can improve over the past few years, but they are going to need a lot of improvement in pitching.   Offensively they look solid from top to bottom.  Defensively, they have some of the best players, but the pitching cannot blow large leads on a regular basis as in the D-Backs series this week.  Although they won two of the three, they let the D-Backs get back into every game after taking a good lead early.

But a 2-1 opening on the road is good although last year they won their first 6 on the road.

NOTES:   The San Diego Padres come into Coors Field on Friday night looking for their first run after getting shutout in their first 3 games to the Dodgers.  Another MLB first for a team to start the season getting shutout 3 times.  The flip side is the Dodgers are the first team to get 3 shutouts to start the season.

Post-Mortem on the Tulo Trade

When I moved to Colorado in 1997, the Rockies were in the Blake Street Bomber phase of their history with Galarraga, Bichette, Castilla and Walker leading the team with homers.  Eric Young was also part of that team and was traded in August of that year, much to the dismay of many fans who had become attached to the hometown team players.

Coming from the East Coast and grown up on the Phillies where players come and go regularly, it surprised me that the Rockies fans didn't realize that players tend to stay only a few years, especially in the free agency era starting in the mid-1970's.

Little did I know that 2 weeks prior to the EY trade to the Dodgers, a young player had taken to the outfield in his Major League Debut as a Rockie and would stay in that uniform until his retirement 16 years later.  We know him as #17 Todd Helton.

But Helton is a rare exception in a business where players rarely play for one team.  Many people expected Tulowitzki to be a Rockie for life, but it was inevitable that he would eventually be traded.  Whether the Rockies got value in return remains to be seen, but many teams have to "grow" by trading seasoned veterans in their prime, to get a future.

The Phillies are in their 133rd season and only have 3 players with 10 years or more playing their entire career in Philadelphia:  Mike Schmidt 18 years, Terry Harmon 10 years, and Bob Miller 10 years.

In all 167 players have played with one team or franchise their entire career.  There are others who were traded late in their careers such as Willie Mays and Hank Aaron, and there are others who were traded early in their careers and made their mark with primarily one team.

The expectation that the Rockies would have 2 in their first 30+ years was unrealistic.  You can create a "family" of players but in order to grow you have to have turnover.

Tulo will be missed here in Colorado, however, more players will come up through the system.  Eventually, the Rockies may figure out who the prototype pitcher for them actually is.  They've been very successful at bringing up young hitters that can play good to great defense.   But their Rockies careers will probably be 6 years or less.  Embrace it.

Disaster!

The Rockies mucked up their first run through the NL West going 7-15 with 3 games postponed until later in the season.    This includes losing the last 9 straight games over the past two weeks.

Last year it was injuries.  This year that's not an excuse other than losing two closers Hawkins and Ottavino the latter lost for the season.   The pitching staff is once again a disaster.   The 5 main Starters have issued 78 walks in 27 starts, and rarely lasts into the 6th inning.  Overall they have given up 160 runs (5.52 rpg).

The hitters aren't excused either.  Although as a team they are hitting .274, their ability to drive in runs is woeful.  After scoring 45 runs (5.0 rpg) in their first 9 games enroute to a 7-2 reccord, they have scored only 68 (3.58 rgp) in their next 19 going 4-15 in that stretch.

The beautiful thing about baseball is that things can change quickly, but this team just doesn't feel like it can rebound enough to compete for a playoff spot.

Sweeps Weeks

It started in San Francisco last week when the Rockies swept a 3 game series at AT&T park against the Giants.  The Rockies promptly went to Los Angeles and got swept by the Dodgers.  The Dodgers then traveled to the Bay Area and got swept by the Giants including two walk offs the last two days.

Three teams are now 3-3 against the other two.

It's early in the season, but the oddity of three sweeps by three teams in a cycle may be a harbinger of how this year will go. The NL West race is the tightest in the National League.  3 games separate the 1st to 5th.  The American League has two divisions that are within 2 games of each other.

MLB has everyone playing in-division in April and early May this year, which has made things very close for the most part as the season unfolds.  The Mets have won 11 in a row and are now 13-3 all against their east opponents.  Cincinnati is the team in the NL Central that has played all of their games in Division and have split 16.  The Giants are 7-10 and the NL West Rep in all of their games so far played in Division.

The Rockies played their first 6 out of division and will play all 4 teams home and away before playing anyone outside the division again.  So far they are 5-5 after 3 series with 15 more games in this stretch.

Swept Up in the Excitement

The Brewers contended for the NL Central title last season and are expected to do the same this year. The Rockies finished 4th and were well out of contention by June last year, and this year are expected to do the same.

The Rockies have won 1 out of every 3 games on the road over the past 3 years, and last year they won 1 in 4.   They've averaged 3.3 runs per game in that span on the road.

Although the Brewers played about .500 at home over the past 2 seasons, so the result of the opening day a sweep by the Rockies and a 20-6 scoring outburst to start the 2015 is certainly welcome.

14 Doubles 5 home runs on the Road, an opening day shutout, first place in the West.  Excellent start.  Home against the Cubbies followed by 28 straight NL West games.

You can't do better than 3-0 to start the season, keep the momentum going.

2015 Outlook

It's Opening Day 2015 and hope springs eternal in all parts of the Major League Baseball Universe.

Except in Colorado.

The Professional Rockies watchers in this town seem to be especially pessimistic this year.  The National Baseball tend to pick the Rockies 4th or 5th with Arizona in the NL West.

And it's very understandable, the Rockies have not added major players to the roster while losing some players who have helped them the past few years.  Kyle Kendrick is the opening day starter followed by Jordan Lyles, Eddie Butler, and Tyler Matzek to start the season.   Gone is Jhoulys Chacin.  Much of the bullpen is the same including closer LaTroy Hawkins in his final year.

The offense/defense lost Michael Cuddyer but picked up Nick Hundley to back up Wilin Rosario who will back up Justin Morneau at First Base.  Utility infielder Josh Rutledge is also gone.

So here is what the Rockies will take into 2015:

Rockies Opening Day Lineup
Charlie Blackmon CF
Carlos Gonzalez RF
Troy Tulowitzki SS
Justin Morneau 1B
Nolan Arenado 3B
Corey Dickerson LF
Nick Hundley C
D.J. LeMahieu 2B
Kyle Kendrick P

I have reasons to be optimistic.   Defensively this team is solid with the infield great and the Outfield fleet.   (Dickerson, probably upgrades the OF over Cuddyer, even though Cuddyer was above average.)

Offensively this team should score.  Personally I think they should rely more on base hits and doubles to the gaps rather than long ball.

So it comes down to pitching.  Lyles was pretty sharp last year before he got hurt, Matzek had a fantastic September, Kendrick is a Coors Field type pitcher.  DeLaRosa is hurt currently and the Rockies will need him back.   Jon Grey is waiting in the wings,

The job of the starters is to keep the bullpen rested.  To do that the Starters need to get into the 7th inning consistently 3 of 5 times.  That uses the bullpen less especially early, but they cannot be constantly coming in, in the 5th like they have in recent years.

Turning to the schedule, the Rockies get tested early.  Starting next Monday, the Rox will have 25 straight games against the NL West and 32 of 38 through May 24th.  Being successful early will give them a jump on their major competitors.  Failing early will put them out of the race quickly.

Here's how it breaks out:  LA 10 games, SF 9, SD 7, and Arizona 6.
They also finish with 25 of 32 against the West.

Lots to talk about but for now it's on to Opening Day!

Rockies will Finish 4th

After 2 straight years of finishing 5th in the West, the 2014 Colorado Rockies will finish 4th.   It remains to be seen if Arizona ties them, but both teams are playing playoff teams this weekend.  Colorado goes to LA to play the Dodgers who are chasing the Nationals for the #1 Seed in the NL, while St. Louis travels to Phoenix to play the D-Backs with Pittsburgh breathing down their necks to win the Central.

The Rockies also won't have the worst record in Franchise History, even though the local media ran with that one early in August, despite the fact that the Rockies have never been on pace to hit 100 Losses, as opposed to 2012, when the Rockies were below the .382 winning percentage needed to hit 100 losses in mid-August.  Granted winning their last 11 of 13 games at home sealed the deal, but it still was premature to talk about 100 losses that early.

So what of the 2015 Rockies?  There is a lot of talk about improved offense but in reality, the Rockies will likely finish with their 6th lowest Run output ever.  On the other hand they will end up with their 8th Best Runs Scored Against Season, which is a little surprising considering that they wen through 15 different starters, 10 of them with at least 8 starts.

Can the Rockies find 5-8 consistent starters in 2015 either from their existing players or via trade?  It may surprise you to know that Tyler Matzek had the best overall ERA of pitchers with 10 or more Starts at 4.05.  DeLaRosa was #2 at 4.10 and Jordan Lyles had a 4.15 ERA.  Do the Rockies exercise the option on Brett Anderson who only managed to pitch 49 games in the past 4 years including 8 this year.

On the Offense and Defense, more questions abound.  Cargo and Tulo have been injury-prone for years, combining for a full-season this year, but can the Rockies move them via trade, or will they be back for 2015.    Charlie Blackmon has exceeded expectations in the leadoff position and played  in a team high 151 games so far edging out D.J. LeMahieu's 148.  Those are the only two everyday players who did not hit the DL this season.

Michael Cuddyer in his last year of his contract is 36 years old, and only played in 47 games this season.  His contract is up and the Rockies will have to decide whether it is worth it to bring the 2013 NL Batting champ back (and if he wants to.)

My biggest concern heading into the off season is why are there so many injuries to Rockies players?  Is it a conditioning issue, or do the Rockies just have fragile players?  If the answer is the former, they need to alter their training/conditioning.  If it's the later, the Rockies need to be better about acquiring more solid players.

The current roster definitely has talent, and ultimately they may not be far off if they can find a way to avoid injuries.  But is it enough?

The Collapse

You've heard it before, "all teams get injuries", "injuries are no excuse".   This year the Rockies have had injuries to too many key players to really contend.  From last night's game notes:

After last night's activation of Carlos Gonzalez, that still leaves 8 players on the DL, 7 of them pitchers.  Brett Anderson will come back tomorrow, but the damage is already done.

The Rockies never have deep starting pitching and this year so far have used 13 different starting pitchers.  Their projected 5 Starters at the beginning of the season (De La Rosa, Anderson, Chacin, Lyles, and Nicasio) have started a total of 59 of 93 games and De La Rosa has 19 of them.  Chacin is done for the season most likely, Nicasio struggled without being hurt and is back in the minors.

For much of the year up until yesterday, there have been at least two of the starting 8 on the DL as well.  Cuddyer is the only starting fielder who is still on the DL and has missed 56 games so far on two stints.  Arenado missed 37 games, Gonzalez 35 and Rosario 12, although he has had other minor injuries that have not landed him on the DL in June and July.  Fortuately, the Rockies have adequate backup in the Outfield to make up for Cuddyer's and Gonzalez's loss, but the lack of infield depth hurt.

I think Nolan Arenado's injury was the biggest blow, because try as they may with several players, there was no adequate fielding backup to Arenado, and outs that he could have made became hits and taxed the pitching even more.

But in the end, the pitching wore down quickly which affected the bullpen, (which was less than effective to begin with) overworking many of them.

With the upcoming break it may bring some relief, to recharge and start over.  Winning the division is out of the question, but getting back to .500 and respectability is a noble goal for 2014.   Getting the pitchers healthy will go a long way to achieving it.

But will they come through?
